07/30/2024

Are you running your A/C day and night but still feeling like you’re trapped inside a broiler?

Not to worry! Troubleshoot your A/C issues with these helpful repair tips. This DIY guide will help you identify why your A/C most likely isn’t producing cool air and offer easy-to-follow instructions on how to fix it. So strap on your tool belt and roll up your sleeves, because it’s time to get down and dirty with these DIY tips!

Check Your Thermostat

Start by ensuring your thermostat is set to cooling mode and the temperature is set correctly. Replace the batteries if needed.

Replace Dirty Air Filters

Clogged air filters can restrict airflow. It’s best to replace your air filters every one to three months. Here’s how:

  1. Turn Off your A/C: Switch off your air conditioner to avoid risking injury and to prevent dust from entering your home.
  2. Find the Air Filter: Look for the filter in one of these three locations:
    • The return air duct or grille
    • The air handler unit of your HVAC system
    • Behind the front grille of a window A/C unit
  3. Remove the Old Filter: Open the filter compartment. You probably need to unscrew or unclip the panel to do this. Note the direction of the airflow arrows on the old filter.
  4. Double Check the Filter Size: The filter dimensions are usually marked on the side. Ensure you purchase the correct size to replace your old, dirty filter.
  5. Install the New Filter: Place the new filter with the arrows pointing in the direction of airflow (towards the blower).
  6. Close the Compartment: Replace the panel or grille and secure it.
  7. Turn the A/C Back On: Switch your air conditioner back on.

Clear the Condenser Coils

Condenser coils are essential to keeping your home cool in the blazing summer heat. These coils are typically made of copper tubing and aluminum fins, and help release heat from inside your house back outside. Here’s how to clean them:

  1. Turn Off the Power: Turn off the thermostat and kill the power at the breaker or disconnect box.
  2. Access the Coils: Locate the coils on the sides of the outdoor unit and remove the access panel.
  3. Remove Debris: Brush off leaves, grass, and other debris from the coils and your unit’s immediate surroundings.
  4. Clean the Coils: Apply a commercial condenser coil cleaner as directed. After it has set, rinse the coils gently with a garden hose.
  5. Reassemble and Restore Power: Reattach the protective panel and turn the power back on.

Look for Refrigerant Leaks

If your A/C isn’t actually cooling your home, it may be leaking refrigerant. Make sure to watch for these signs:

  • Unusual noises like hissing or bubbling
  • Ice forming on evaporator coils or refrigerant lines
  • A sudden increase in your energy bill with no change in usage

If you suspect a refrigerant leak, contact a professional technician as soon as possible. Refrigerant is a hazardous material, and professionals have the expertise and tools to find and fix leaks safely.
