Do you ever feel like someone’s out to get you? It sounds crazy, but how else do you explain all the broken appliances, suspiciously high energy bills, soap that doesn’t lather, and your dry, brittle hair that feels ready to fall out? Maybe your house is haunted. Maybe you’ve become the mistaken target of Russian spies. Maybe there are sneaky little gremlins living in your walls and sabotaging your home. Or, maybe you just have hard water.
What is Hard Water, and Why is it a Problem?
As water flows through rocks and soil, it picks up minerals. Hard water contains high levels of minerals like calcium and magnesium. Depending on your location, your water may contain more of these minerals than other places. And while having excess calcium and magnesium in your water isn’t necessarily harmful to your health, they can cause serious damage to your plumbing, appliances, and even your skin and hair.
5 Common Hard Water Issues:
- Soap Scum & Poor Lather: Soap doesn’t lather well in hard water, leaving residue on dishes, clothes, and skin.
- Dry Skin and Hair: The minerals strip moisture from your skin and hair, causing dryness and irritation.
- Limescale Buildup: Mineral deposits (known as scaling) build up in pipes and appliances, reducing efficiency.
- Shorter Appliance Lifespan: Appliances like water heaters, dishwashers, and washing machines wear out faster due to scaling.
- Higher Energy Bills: Appliances work harder to overcome blockages caused by limescale, consuming more energy.
Benefits of Installing a Water Softener
- Cleaner Dishes and Laundry: Say goodbye to cloudy glassware or and stiff clothes.
- Healthier Skin and Hair: Soft water retains moisture, leaving your skin and hair feeling silky smooth.
- Longer-Lasting Appliances: Reducing mineral buildup extends the life of water-based appliances.
- Energy Efficiency: With clean pipes and appliances, your systems work more efficiently, lowering your energy costs.
- Improved Plumbing: Reduce the risk of clogs and corrosion caused by limescale buildup.
How Do Water Softeners Work?
Water softeners consist primarily of a resin tank and a brine tank. The resin tank is filled with beads that attract hard minerals. These beads are coated with sodium ions and have a negative charge. As hard water flows through the tank, the positively charged calcium and magnesium ions stick to the beads, swapping places with the sodium ions. This exchange process “softens” the water.
Over time, beads become saturated with minerals. So, the softener then flushes the beads using the saltwater solution to remove the buildup and recharge beads with sodium ions. This cycle ensures a continuous supply of soft water for your home.
